ZAGREB AND TRAKOSCAN CASTLE

header

4 days/3 nights - city break

Zagreb has grown out of the two mediaeval settlements, Kaptol and Gradec, that for centuries developed on neighbouring hills. In 1094, a diocese was founded on Kaptol, while in 1242 Gradec was proclaimed a free royal city. Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a typical Central European town with its lively city centre busting with activity. The 20th century brought the Secession style to its public buildings, parks and fountains, emanating the lofty spirit of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. Take a stroll through its Tkalciceva Street with numerous galleries, visit its colourful open-air market, coffee houses, fine restaurants and parks…

We drive to the Trakoscan castle (13th century), perched on a small hill overlooking the large park and forest area. The castle changed owners during the past, first owners were the Counts of Celje. In the16th century the estate was given to Juraj Draskovic by King Maximilian for services rendered. In the 19th century count Juraj V. Draškovic turned it into its residential dwelling, while the surrounding park with pond was modeled in the spirit of German Romantic parks.
