Slano

is a village in southern Croatia and a small harbour in the bay of the same name. It is located 27 km northwest of Dubrovnik and lies in a deep and excellently sheltered bay. Human habitation dates here back to prehistoric times (ruins of a hill-fort and tumuli on the nearby hills were found). The Dubrovnk Republc took over this area at the end of the 14th century, raising in Slano the Duke's palace and a Franciscan monastery whose church of St. Jerome was built in 1420. A new one was raised on its site in the 16th century in a Gothic-Renaissance style. In the northern part of the settlement is the Renaissance summer-house complex of the Ohmučević family. The most famous Renaissance Dubrovnik painter Nikola Božidarević was born in the village Kručica over Slano. Together with the surounding are, Slano suffered great damages during the agression of the Serbian and Montenegrian army in 1991.
Farming, olive-growing, viniculture, fruit-growing, tobacco, herbs (sage, laurel, woodworm), fishing and tourism are the villages chief occupations.Yachts can anchor in the small protected Banja cove. Anchoring-ground for larger yachts lies off the entrance in the cove, to the southwest of Cape Gornji.
