Koločep was the Greek called Calaphodia. Later it became a Roman colony and with the development of the Dubrovnik Republic was taken into its orbit. Its past is still marked by three old churches and one turret from the 16th century, used for defence against the pirates.
In two small villages, Gornje and Donje Čelo, there are approximately 200 inhabitants. The whole island is covered with rich southern vegetation and has some sandy beaches connected with numerious paths and footways, enabling visitors to enjoy in true Mediterranean cliimate.
Koločep is the smallest (2,3 sq.km) inhabited island og the Elaphite Island, and only 3 n/m away from Gruž harbor in Dubrovnik.
